A young woman in a rain-spotted coat and hat listens to a radio headset at the Boston Radio Show, a trade exhibition that drew crowds eager to see the newest receiving sets during the early broadcasting boom. The 1922 date places the picture just as commercial radio was taking off, when families were beginning to buy receivers and listening in became a popular pastime. The photograph came from Underwood & Underwood, a studio whose press images of events and public life were widely distributed to newspapers. Its rainy-day detail and the nervous, attentive pose make it a useful glimpse of how the public first encountered radio as a novelty.
