Gustave Baumann's color woodcut "Night of the Fiesta - Taos" turns to a New Mexico village after dark, a subject that sets it apart from the daylight landscapes that dominated his early work. Baumann, a German-born artist who settled in Santa Fe and became one of the leading printmakers of the Southwest, cut the block and pulled the impressions by hand, layering color to build the glow of lamps and bonfires against the night. The print dates to 1921, when Taos was a magnet for painters and writers drawn to its Pueblo and Hispano traditions and its religious festivals. Pencil signature and numbering mark it as one of the individually pulled impressions Baumann prized.
