Benjamin Franklin appears in this 1783 London cartoon alongside George III, Charles James Fox and Lord North, with witches and a sunrise or sunset. Published by M. Smith on Fleet Street on April 16, 1783, it comments on the peace that ended the American Revolutionary War. Preliminary terms had been signed in late 1782, and the final treaty was still being negotiated in Paris, where Franklin was one of the American commissioners. That spring, Fox and North had formed an uneasy coalition ministry, which the king disliked, and political cartoonists of the period often used such pairings to mock the men involved.
