Joseph Pennell's 1913 lithograph, *The temple by the sea*, places a temple at the water's edge, and its caption card links it to a series titled *Land of temples*. Pennell, a Philadelphian, was known for precise drawings of buildings and travel scenes, and he worked in lithography as well as etching and pen drawing. Signed in pencil and issued in an edition of 50, the print reflects his careful attention to architectural form, though the catalog notes that its details are unverified.
