Lt. Russell L. Maughan, an Army Air Service pilot, is the subject of this glass negative, dated March 28, 1923. Maughan was known for long-distance military flying in the early 1920s, when aviation was still new and each cross-country flight drew public attention. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded news and public figures, made the image, and the plate reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. The surface shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which is typical of glass plates of this age.
