Titled "The Young Housekeeper. Dusting the Parlor," this stereograph shows a child taking up a household chore in a well-kept front room. It was issued by F.L. Stuber of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, as card No. 572, and its c1870 date comes from an older caption that has not been verified. Stereo cards like this were viewed through a stereoscope, which merged two slightly offset photographs into one image with apparent depth, and they sold widely as parlor entertainment. Scenes of everyday domestic life such as this one often carried an implied lesson about tidiness and training for young people.
