Hedda Hopper, the Hollywood gossip columnist, began as a stage and silent-film actress before building one of the most feared columns in America. This glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news and celebrity pictures to newspapers. The Library of Congress notes that its title comes from unverified caption data on the negative or its card, so the identification rests on that source. Glass plates like this one preserve sharp detail that later film could not always match.
