The title pairs two names, Edward Hugh Sothern and Julia Marlowe, the American actors who were best known for playing Shakespeare together on stage and who married in 1911. Their partnership drew wide attention in the early 1900s, when they toured with their Shakespearean repertory. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a New York news photography service that operated roughly from 1900 to the 1920s. The record gives no date, and the title is taken from caption cards that have not been verified, so the picture's exact occasion remains uncertain.
