Two generations of Algerian women share the frame in this 1977 color portrait from the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division. The record does not name the sitters, so the picture speaks mainly through its pairing of an older woman and a younger one. It was made by the dye destruction process, a color printing method widely used in the 1970s that produced saturated, vivid colors. It dates from more than a decade after Algeria gained independence from France in 1962, a period of rapid social change, and portraits like this one help show how family ties and everyday life were recorded during those years.
