Among the new warships that drew public attention in the early 1890s, the armored cruiser *New York* stood out as a sign of a United States Navy being rebuilt after decades of neglect. This Currier & Ives lithograph shows her as a steel-hulled vessel, a break from the wooden and iron ships of earlier decades and a marker of America's return to serious naval construction. By 1893 the firm was past its peak, but it still issued topical prints like this one for a public eager to see the modern fleet. The ship went on to serve in the Spanish-American War, taking part in the fighting at Santiago de Cuba in 1898.
