Looking down from a balloon basket, this view is unusual for a gallery of balloon photographs in that it focuses on the ground rather than the envelope or the crew. A band of autumn trees runs across the frame, with a highway cutting through the woods and a scattering of houses set along its edge. Aerial photography from balloons was practiced widely in the early twentieth century, when the vantage point let photographers record how roads, settlements and forests were laid out across the countryside. Pictures like this one document a landscape in transition, where new roads were opening rural land to development.
