A cyanotype titled *A visit to the Library of Congress* records a day spent inside the institution, probably around 1899, though the date is uncertain. The Library had moved into its new Jefferson Building only a couple of years earlier, in 1897, so visitors of this period were touring a freshly completed marble building. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer known for documenting the city's institutions and people, made the print, which survives in an album labeled "8th Division." Cyanotypes use an inexpensive iron-based process that yields the blue-and-white tones visible here.
