The record names Willette Kershaw, a performer whose name the Bain News Service wrote on its caption cards. The library notes that this title comes from unverified data, so the identification should be read with that caveat. Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers, and its glass negatives, made mostly from about 1900 into the 1920s, document stage personalities, public figures, and news events of the period. Because this record gives no date, the picture is best seen as an example of the agency's theater and celebrity work, made on the large glass plates that press photographers used before flexible film took over.
