Robert Peary, the Arctic explorer, is the subject here, and the Bain News Service caption attached to the glass negative gives his name and rank only, with no date or other detail. Peary is best known for leading expeditions in northern Greenland and for his disputed claim to have reached the North Pole in April 1909. The Bain News Service was a New York wire photo agency that sold images of newsworthy figures to newspapers, so portraits like this one were made to be reproduced quickly alongside current stories about the Arctic.
