Denton True "Cy" Young is the figure this portrait puts front and center, and the Boston Americans uniform places him with the club that signed him in its early years of the American League. Young pitched for Boston from 1901 through 1908 and won 511 games across his career, a total no pitcher has matched. Photographer George Grantham Bain made thousands of news and sports pictures for newspapers in New York, and his glass-plate and negative collection preserved how players of the era looked on and off the field.
