Issued the same year Rutherford B. Hayes took office, this color chromolithograph shows him at the start of his presidency. Hayes was inaugurated in March 1877, after a disputed election that was settled by a congressional compromise, and his administration would soon end federal military occupation of the former Confederate states. The print was copyrighted in 1877 by G. F. Gilman. Chromolithography, which layered several inked stone or plate impressions to build up color, was a relatively affordable way to put a president's likeness into homes and offices in the 1870s.
