Men signing up for the Engineer branch are the subject of this glass negative, which the Bain News Service labeled with a title taken from its own caption cards and not checked against other records. The record gives no date or location, but the Bain agency, based in New York from the early 1900s into the 1920s, supplied news pictures to newspapers that followed military mobilization closely. Negatives of this size kept far more tonal detail than the halftone reproductions that later ran in print, which makes them worth a closer look.
