Broadway, the long avenue that runs through Manhattan's theater district, is the setting here, and the title points to crowds being managed along its busy stretch. The image is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption information, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Still, the subject reflects a common problem of the period, when growing city streets and public gatherings required police and onlookers to be handled in ways that appear in many of the agency's pictures.
