Louise Homer, the American contralto, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Homer (1871–1947) was a leading singer at the Metropolitan Opera and was known for her rich lower voice and her recordings. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with pictures from the early 1900s, made many portraits of performers of the era, and this negative belongs to that body of work. The record gives no exact date, so the sitting is best placed in Homer's active years on the New York stage.
