Labeled simply "Congressman Barthold," this glass negative carries a title taken from data the National Photo Company wrote on the plate or its sleeve, and that title has not been independently verified. The company worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century and produced large numbers of portraits of politicians, officials and public buildings, much of it for publication and sale. Its negatives from about 1909 to 1919 used light-sensitive glass coatings that can deteriorate over time, which is why streaks and blemishes like those noted here appear on many surviving plates. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
