Little is recorded about the subject of this glass negative beyond the rank and name Sgt. Francis J. Brown, a title the Bain News Service supplied on the negative or its caption card without verification. Bain's New York agency sold news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its plates came to the Library of Congress with few details attached. The missing date means the picture has to be placed by its format, since a 5 x 7 inch or smaller glass plate points to the years before roll film largely replaced it in news work. Treat the name as a lead for research rather than a settled identification.
