This glass negative is labeled J.B. Wells, a title the Bain News Service recorded on its negative sleeves or caption cards. The record notes that the identification has not been verified, and it gives no date. George Grantham Bain founded the New York agency around 1899 to supply news pictures to newspapers, and its glass plates document the politicians, public figures and events of the early twentieth century. Without further notes, the sitter's role and the occasion remain uncertain, but the plate's format places it within that fast-paced newsroom practice.
