This color engraving, titled in German as *Die Helden der Revolution* ("The Heroes of the Revolution"), places George Washington at the center of a group of officers who came to the American cause from Europe and elsewhere. Johann de Kalb, Baron von Steuben, Kazimierz Pulaski, Tadeusz Kościuszko, and Lafayette stand beside him, along with John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg, a Pennsylvania German who served as a general. The German title and the publisher, H. Peters of New York, suggest the print was made for German-speaking Americans, who took pride in the German and Polish officers who fought in the war.
