The title names a person rather than a place: "Earl Roseberry," a spelling that may be a variant of the Earl of Rosebery, the peerage held by Archibald Primrose, the Scottish Liberal statesman who served as British prime minister from 1894 to 1895. The record itself is unverified, since the Bain News Service recorded names from caption cards that were not always checked. Bain's agency supplied photographs to newspapers in New York and elsewhere in the early twentieth century, so this glass negative reflects the working press trade of that era. With no date recorded, the occasion is uncertain, and the sitter's identity should be treated as a working attribution.
