Middleburg, a small town in Fauquier County, Virginia, is the setting for this glass negative, which records a race meeting of the sort that drew horse people from across the Virginia Piedmont in the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. firm that documented the city and surrounding region from about 1909 into the 1930s, produced the image, though the record gives only a date range and a title taken from the company's own notes, so the exact day and event are unconfirmed. The glass plate itself shows streaks and blemishes from the slow decay of its original coating, which gives the surface a worn, mottled character worth noticing.
