The U.S. Capitol sits on Capitol Hill at the east end of the National Mall, and its dome and wings have anchored the city's skyline since the building was completed in the 1800s. Designed in part by William Thornton and later reshaped by Benjamin Latrobe and Charles Bulfinch, the Capitol housed Congress after the federal government moved to Washington in 1800. Its cast-iron dome, finished during the Civil War, was topped by the Statue of Freedom, and the building has served as the stage for inaugurations and major national debates ever since.
