The U.S. Capitol sits on Capitol Hill at the east end of the National Mall, and its dome and wings have served as the meeting place of Congress since 1800, when the government moved to Washington from Philadelphia. The building was begun in 1793 under the design of William Thornton and was expanded over the following decades, with the iron dome added in the 1850s during the Civil War era. Many views of the building show its west front, the side that faces the Mall, which has long been the setting for presidential inaugurations and public gatherings.
