This wood engraving shows German emigrants boarding a steamer bound from Hamburg for New York, a scene the artist set against the crowded departure that the title's "old world" and "new world" frame. Published in Harper's Weekly in November 1874, it reflects a period when Hamburg was one of the main European departure ports for passengers crossing the Atlantic, and when steamships had largely replaced sailing vessels on that route. Scenes like this one, with families, luggage, and crowded decks, were a common subject for illustrated weeklies that were covering the steady flow of immigrants arriving in New York.
