Visscher's 1616 view looks at London from across the Thames, with the river, the crowded houses of London Bridge, and the cathedral of Old St. Paul's laid out across one wide sheet. The title gives the year, and the record names Visscher as the associated maker. In 1616 London Bridge was still the only bridge over the Thames in the city, so the view shows the main link between the two banks. Old St. Paul's had lost its spire to lightning in 1561 and was never rebuilt, so the church appears without it. Viewers often study such prints for the dense detail of the waterfront and streets.
