Rather than showing the gold fields, this lithograph depicts a line of pack animals crossing the Chilkoot Pass, the steep mountain route many prospectors took toward the Klondike. It advertised *Heart of the Klondike*, a melodrama written by Scott Marble, and reflects how theatrical producers of the late 1890s borrowed the excitement of the gold rush to draw audiences. The Strobridge Lithographing Company, a Cincinnati firm with a New York office, printed the sheet in color around 1897. The pass was notoriously hard going, and the poster's dramatic scene captures the struggle that made it a symbol of the rush.
