Few places on the Klondike trail were as punishing as Chilkoot Pass, the mountain crossing on the boundary between Alaska and British Columbia. Beginning in 1897, many thousands of prospectors hauled supplies up its steep, snowy slopes in repeated trips, since Canadian authorities required each entrant to carry about a ton of provisions into the Yukon. The final climb to the summit, where stampeders cut footholds into the ice known as the Golden Stairs, became one of the defining hardships of the gold rush.
