Dorothy Gish, the silent-film actress and younger sister of Lillian Gish, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that supplied pictures of theater people, politicians and news events to newspapers from the early 1900s into the 1920s, and its work survives mainly as glass plates like this one. The record gives no date, and the identification comes from the agency's own caption data, which was not independently verified. Gish rose to prominence in silent comedies and dramas during the 1910s and 1920s, so the portrait belongs to that era of studio-era celebrity.
