This glass negative is titled "Dorothy Arville," a name the Library of Congress lists as unverified and taken from caption cards kept with the Bain News Service negatives. George Grantham Bain built the agency in New York in the early twentieth century, and it supplied newspapers with photographs of people and events on short deadlines. Its small glass plates, usually no larger than 5 by 7 inches, were filed with handwritten or typed cards, so the caption is often the main clue to who appears in a picture. Because this record gives no date, the name and subject are the best starting points for further research.
