The only name attached to this negative is "Pertile," and that title comes from unverified notes the Bain News Service wrote on the negatives or caption cards, so it may not describe the subject accurately. The George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress holds work from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its glass negatives, usually 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were made to be printed quickly for daily publication. Their captions were often brief and sometimes incomplete, so the pictures are best read alongside the agency's own records.
