A fan's keepsake from the first modern World Series, this card was printed to get the crowd singing along. In October 1903, the Boston Americans met the Pittsburgh Pirates in a best-of-nine series, and Boston's loyal fan group, the Royal Rooters, made "Tessie" their signature song at the ballpark. Cards like this one put the lyrics in the hands of ordinary spectators, so they could join in on the grandstand. Its mix of team names, date and song title captures how sport, music and civic pride blended in turn-of-the-century American cities.
