Printed in Boston in 1782, this etching sets an allegorical contrast in its title: America triumphant and Britannia in distress. The year followed the British surrender at Yorktown in October 1781, and the war was winding down while peace talks began in Paris. A second impression served as the frontispiece to Weatherwise's Town and Country Almanack, which shows how such images reached ordinary households through popular almanacs. The sheet has been trimmed irregularly, so its edges may not preserve the full original margins.
