Enrico Caruso, the Italian tenor, is the subject of this glass negative, one of the many portraits the Bain News Service produced of performers and public figures in New York in the early twentieth century. Caruso was among the most celebrated opera singers of his era, performing at the Metropolitan Opera from 1903 until shortly before his death in 1921, and his fame was amplified by early phonograph recordings. The Bain News Service, a photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain, supplied newspapers with images of such personalities, and its glass negatives now form a major part of the Library of Congress holdings. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unknown, but the portrait reflects the demand for images of stars of the stage.
