Two women are named in the caption for this glass negative, Mrs. F.W. Goddard and Mrs. E. Caruso, and the second may refer to the wife of the Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, who sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York for much of the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service, which made and distributed the negative, was a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures, events and fashionable life. The names come from the agency's caption data, which has not been independently verified, so the date and occasion remain uncertain. The picture still offers a useful view of how celebrity and social portraits moved through the press in that period.
