*Buildings* is a color etching from 1953, one of only 20 impressions in its edition; this copy is numbered 14 and signed and dated in pencil below the plate. Architecture was a natural subject for printmakers of the period, and the etching medium suited the crisp lines and tonal shifts of city structures. The Pennell Fund, named for the etcher and illustrator Joseph Pennell, whose celebrated architectural drawings recorded American cities, helped the Library of Congress build its holdings of American prints. Its acquisition reflects that tradition of printmaking devoted to the built environment.
