Titled simply *La Barricade*, this 1871 lithograph takes its subject from the street barricades that defined the Paris Commune, the radical government that held the city from March to May of that year. Barricades of paving stones, furniture and carts were thrown up across Paris during the uprising, and they became potent symbols for both its defenders and its opponents. The Commune ended in the "Bloody Week" of late May 1871, when government troops retook the city and many barricades were overrun. Prints like this one circulated widely at the time, so they offer a view of how the events were visualized as they unfolded.
