The caption names two people, Mrs. Mower and a second person abbreviated as "Stew. Walker," but the record flags that title as unverified, so the identities and the occasion remain open. The record does establish the medium: a single glass plate negative of 5 by 7 inches or smaller, the format that working press photographers relied on in the early twentieth century. The George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress preserves negatives from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied pictures of people and events to newspapers from about 1899 into the 1930s. Plates like this one were made for quick news use, so they offer a direct, unposed view of their time.
