A gun at Zeebrugge, the Belgian North Sea port, is the subject here, and the caption says the Germans, called "Gers" in wartime slang, spoiled it, meaning they disabled it before it could be used. Germany held Zeebrugge for most of the First World War and used it as a base for submarines and raiding craft, and British naval forces attacked its harbor works in April 1918. The George Grantham Bain Collection came from the New York news photography business Bain News Service, but the record gives no date for this negative and the title is unverified, so treat the details as provisional.
