The glass negative is titled for Wilhelm I, the Prussian king who became German emperor in 1871 and oversaw the unification of Germany under Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, though that identification rests on unverified caption cards from the Bain News Service. Bain was a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers and magazines, so the negative likely existed to produce copies for publication. Its survival among the agency's files, now held by the Library of Congress, offers a window into how illustrated news circulated in the early twentieth century.
