The title gives this glass negative its German name, Lothringen, the term for Lorraine, a region on the border between France and Germany. Control of the area shifted repeatedly over the centuries, and from 1871 to 1918 it belonged to the German Empire as part of Elsass-Lothringen, a change that kept the region in the news. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied newspapers and magazines, would have circulated such views to its clients. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption information, so the exact subject and occasion remain uncertain.
