Evelyn Waugh, the English novelist and satirist, is named on this card with only his life dates, 1903 to 1966, and no date or photographer is recorded for the portrait itself. Waugh made his name with the comic novel *Decline and Fall* (1928) and later wrote *Brideshead Revisited* (1945), a work about English aristocratic families and Catholic faith that shaped his reputation. He spent much of his career in the interwar and postwar years, when British society and its old country-house world were changing fast. Because the card gives no date, a viewer should treat the image's exact timing as unknown.
