Few pictures in this set show the working side of Lima's military life, which makes this view of the arsenal at Santa Catalina stand out. Made in 1868 by Courret Hermanos, a photographic studio in Lima run by French brothers, it is an albumen print, a process that bound silver salts to paper with egg white and was standard for commercial views of the period. The image comes from the second volume of *Recuerdos del Perú*, an album of views of the country, and it was taken only a few years after the Chincha Islands conflict with Spain ended in 1866, when military supplies were a pressing concern.
