Two performers pose together on a bicycle, with Esther Lyon riding and Oscar Eagle standing beside her, in a scene staged for *A Brilliant Idea*, a theatrical production named on the card. The picture dates to about 1897, near the height of the bicycle craze, when cycling was fashionable on both sides of the Atlantic and the wheel became a common stage prop. Chicago photographer W. M. Morrison registered the image for copyright, which suggests it was made as publicity to be sold to theater audiences and the press. Its value today lies in showing how the bicycle, then a new symbol of freedom and fashion, was used on stage.
