The only identifier on this glass negative is the surname Werrenrath, taken from the Bain News Service caption card, and it most likely refers to Reinald Werrenrath, a concert baritone who performed widely in the United States in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service, founded in New York by George Grantham Bain, supplied photographs of public figures, performers and news events to newspapers, so a portrait like this was made for press use. The record gives no date, so the exact year of the sitting is unknown, though the collection as a whole dates largely from about 1900 to 1920.
