Lille, the textile and industrial city in northern France near the Belgian border, is the subject of this glass negative, one of the Bain News Service's many views of places rather than people or events. The record gives no date, but the Bain agency, a New York photo service active from the late 1890s into the early 1930s, supplied images like this to newspapers and magazines. Lille spent most of the First World War under German occupation, from 1914 to 1918, which gives the city particular significance in the period when the agency was most active. Because the title comes from the agency's own unverified notes, the place name is the most dependable detail, and the date and exact view would need further research.
