What sets this negative apart is its name. The record gives the sitter as Owen Lovejoy, but that title comes from caption data written by the Bain News Service and has not been verified. The name matches Owen Lovejoy, the Illinois abolitionist congressman who died in 1864, yet this Bain negative dates from the early twentieth century, so the sitter may well be a different man. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, sold news photographs to newspapers, and its glass negatives record the people and events it covered in that period.
